An Australian teenager has tragically died after being struck by a cricket delivery during a practice session in the Australian city.

The teenage player was practicing in cricket cages in Ferntree Gully on Tuesday when he was struck in the upper body by a ball from an mechanical bowler. Reports indicate he was using a protective headgear at the moment of the accident.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 5 PM in the afternoon and the young man was transported to the children's medical facility in grave state. He was put on medical support systems but died on Wednesday.

Community Reaction and Condolences

The teenager's local cricket club expressed they were "completely heartbroken" by the "untimely death" of one of their players and that the adolescent's death "will impact by everyone in our sports family".

"I know how strongly this news will impact across our community and we will offer any and all support we can to our teams and sports community," said the community sports leader.

In a online statement, the teenager's sports team extended their sympathies to his loved ones and friends and "to all of those who were acquainted with him and the joy that he provided".

"We ask you to please respect the personal space of the family during this difficult time," the post added.

Protective Concerns in Cricket

This tragedy happens just over a decade after another Australian cricketer died after being hit on the upper body by a ball while playing in a national tournament.

That previous death, for which authorities ultimately found no-one was to blame, catalyzed enhancements to protective gear for those playing the sport.
