Debunking Venezuela Victory Footage and AI Images of Nicolás Maduro.

AI-generated images purporting to portray Nicolás Maduro detained following his capture by the US have garnered tens of millions of impressions online.

How AI Images of the President Appeared Soon After

The first fabricated AI image seemingly displaying him taken off a plane surfaced within hours. The picture was unpublished by any authoritative American sources; rather, it was uploaded on the platform X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.

Our analysis used Google’s SynthID, confirming the picture was created or altered with Google AI.

More synthetic images started circulating in the following hours, purporting to present more angles of Maduro under guard. Discernible logos on these images reveal they were posted by an Instagram account called ultravfx.

AI analysis confirms the further pictures were similarly generated or edited AI technology.

Authentic Image Posted but Fabrications Persisted

Donald Trump shared the genuine photograph of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. However, despite the authentic image was made public, AI-generated pictures persisted online but were altered to incorporate the grey athletic wear seen on Maduro.

Reverse image searches reveal the new fake images were originally uploaded on TikTok by a digital art profile. Again, the AI-watermark detector confirms these further images were created or altered Google AI.
